Continents Cup

This made for TV event provides a few small hints to see who is ready for the coming season, and who is not, and provides a little insight into how the business of skating is evolving.

In all four events, the results follow the relative orders of finish at 1996 Worlds, except for Kwiatkowski placing behind Gusmeroli, whom she beat at Worlds. Kwan and Eldridge appear primed for the coming season, while Stojko is still in the doldrums, and Davis is going nowhere.

The event was thrown together for the benefit of TV, and held in Canada to avoid contractual problems with the exclusive contract USFSA has with ABC. The French association wanted Candeloro to compete in this event, but he had a prior show commitment, and refused. In retaliation the French association enlisted the help of the US association to have him bumped from the show, and as a result he skated in neither.
