After being held in Southern Europe for three years, the Grand Prix Final 2017 takes place in Nagoya, a city of around three million people (including the suburbs) in central Japan and about 150 miles southwest of Tokyo. The city-owned rink, several miles southeast of downtown, is called Nippon Gaishi Hall and has a maximum capacity of 10,000 people, but is configured for 6000 spectators for this competition. Nagoya is the home of Toyota cars. In the skating world, the city is known for the single skating school of Machiko Yamada whose most prominent skaters were Midori Ito, the triple Axel jumper of the years around 1990, and Mao Asada, the triple Axel jumper of the years between 2006 and 2014. Both of them were also World Champions.
