Overview

The second stop on the Grand Prix is Skate Canada.  This year the competition is being held in Quebec City, Canada -- the first time this competition is being held in the province of Quebec.

Due to the withdrawal of several of the top ranked competitors, the glamour of this event has been greatly reduced.  In addition, many of the competitors competed last week at Skate America, so there is little new blood among the top contenders here to liven up the event.

Greatest interest centers around the ladies event where Sasha Cohen goes up against Fumie Suguri. For the U.S., all the other events are pretty much a total loss.   Don't expect any of the American men, pairs or dancers to make it into the top half of any of their events.

The back story here remains the super-secret interim scoring system that showed off all its weaknesses at Skate America and is performing no better here (as of the second day of the event).  It is impossible to figure out why anyone was placed where they were, and so far about 40% of the placements appear to be skewed by the random choice of judges, including two out of three of the medal placements in each event.

In the compulsory dance, two teams (one Canadian, one French) each received one set of marks that were way out of line with the other nine.  It would be interesting to know if this was due to national bias -- but we will never know because it's all a big secret now.  It would be interesting to know if the ISU is going to look into this -- but we will never know because it's all a big secret now.  The ISU says we should trust them to take care of everything -- but we will never know if we can because it's all a big secret now.
