Overview

Skate America is the first event of the 2000/01 Grand Prix series, and the first major event of the competition season.  It is being held at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, CO where it was also held in 1999.  There are 11 ladies, 11 men, 8 pairs, and 11 dance couples competing here this year, representing 10 nations.

In the ladies event Michelle Kwan is the favorite with her nearest competition expected to be Sarah Hughes and the two Russian ladies, Elena Sokolova and Victoria Volchkova.  Todd Eldredge has returned to top level ISU competition and will be closely watched to see how competitive he will be against World Champion Alexei Yagudin and the other American skaters here, Timothy Goebel and Trifun Zivanovic.  The two top ranked teams in the pairs event are Xue Chen & Hongbo Zhao (2nd at 2000 Worlds) and Jamie Sale & David Pelletier (4th at 2000 Worlds).  In dance the top contenders are Barbara Fusar Poli & Maurizio Margaglio (2th at 2000 Worlds), recently married Margarita Drobiazko & Povilas Vanagas (3th at 2000 Worlds), and Galit Chait & Sergei Sakhnovski (5th at 2000 Worlds).  Also of interest here are Canadians Shae-Lynn Bourne & Victor Kraatz, the 4-time former World Bronze medalists.  They are attempting a comeback after having been out of competition since 1999 during which time Bourne has undergone surgery on both knees.
